[Historic post part 1 for any fellow medieval enth [Historic post part 1 for any fellow medieval enthusiasts!] . Ive got a bit sidetracked with work due to discovering an old family tree. With further research I found that my Norman line is linked to Sir Yves Charruel (titled the man of Iron). He took part in the Combat des Trente (combat of the thirty) in 1351, in Brittany near the town of Ploërmel. 30 Breton Knights faced 30 English (with a few Breton rebels and German mercenaries). It was an organised battle to determine who would rule the duchy of Brittany. The combattants met beneath an oak, watched by a crowd of spectators. It was an exhausting long fight, with several pauses so the fighters could catch their breath and have water. Finally the Bretons, led by Jean de Beaumaroir (helped by my ancestor!) broke the English and won the day. . It would go down in history as a noble display of the ideals of chivalry. Those who fought were held in great respect. .
